Synopsis
Leon explains why his Teaching AI Ethics series needs a 2025 overhaul, recaps the original nine issues, and invites readers to help deepen the conversation.
The Original Nine Issues
The original 2023 series covered nine key areas of AI ethics:
- Bias and Discrimination — How AI systems perpetuate and amplify societal biases
- Environment — The environmental costs of training and running AI systems
- Truth and Academic Integrity — AI hallucinations and the potential for misuse
- Copyright — Complex legal and ethical questions about AI-generated content
- Privacy — Data collection, surveillance, and the erosion of personal privacy
- Datafication — How all aspects of our lives are turned into data points
- Affect Recognition — The ethical implications of emotion-detecting AI
- Human Labour — The hidden workforce behind AI systems
- Power — How AI concentrates power in the hands of a few corporations
Why Update?
Since 2023, the AI landscape has shifted dramatically. Microsoft invested $13 billion in OpenAI. Apple integrated AI across its products. Massive datasets were scraped without consent. Deepfakes proliferated. The original articles remain relevant, but the conversation has deepened significantly.
The 2025 series revisits each of these themes with updated research, new case studies, and refreshed teaching resources.
